Pumped hydro threatens our pristine valley
Many residents of Ogunbil and Duncans Creek near Tamworth, NSW got a rude shock in December 2024 when French energy giant EDF published all their property lot numbers in the local newspaper. The notice said that all of their properties would be affected by a pumped hydro power station on Dungowan Creek. This was the first any of them had heard of this scheme.
EDF is Électricité de France, a multinational electric utility company owned by the French government which wants to build a large-scale 300MW pumped hydro power station about 5kms downstream of Dungowan Dam.
We did some research and discovered that the project has been in development for ten years. Over that time there has been no warning, no information, and absolutely zero community consultation. Land owners have been kept totally in the dark with this outrageous plan.
This project risks our lives, property values, insurance premiums, quality of life, farm productivity, road safety, environment, visual amenity and firefighting capacity. It will capture at least 12 springs currently feeding into our creek, take 5 gigalitres of water allocation & lock it away for decades. Will your water be impacted?
“They couldn’t have picked a worse spot for pumped hydro.”
